Why is eggs considered dairy?

Ever wondered why even though eggs are not actually dairy products (as they don’t come from mammals like cows, sheep, or goats), they are considered a part of the dairy food group? Well, it’s because of the following reasons:

  • They are a great source of calcium and other important and beneficial nutrients found in dairy products such as milk and cheese.
  • They are often grouped with dairy products in the supermarket, food, or grocery store because they share some similarities in terms of culinary uses and nutritional content.
  • They are often used as ingredients in many dairy-based products like ice creams, mayonnaise, and custards. The same is true for many baked goods such as pastries and cakes.
  • Nutritionally, eggs are a good source of vitamins, healthy fats, proteins, and minerals like choline, vitamin D, and B12.
  • Examples of organic dairy foods include Milk, eggs, cheeses, butter, and yogurt.
  • Simply put, eggs are in essence not dairy products but are always grouped with them due to their nutritional content and culinary uses.

What are dairy products to avoid?

While organic dairy products have high nutritional benefits and improve overall health, there are dairy products that you need to avoid. Dairy products such as Ice cream, cream, and whole milk which contain added sugars and high saturated fats should be avoided. Consequently, dairy products made from non-organic dairy such as butter, milk, and cheese should be avoided as they are likely to contain antibiotics, hormones, and harmful pesticides. Some processed cheese products are also known to be high in preservatives and high additives and should be avoided. If you want to consume dairy products, go for organic ones!

Why is dairy so unhealthy?

While dairy products are generally healthy, they can be deemed unhealthy for some people because they contain lactose (a natural sugar found in milk), cholesterol, and saturated fats. When you consume high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats, you increase your risk of a heart disease. If your body is lactose intolerant, you are bound to experience digestive problems such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea. That being said, it’s imperative to note that not all dairy products are unhealthy. In fact, most dairy products are healthy and recommended part of a balanced diet. However, as is with anything else, they should be taken in moderation. Most people without any form of allergies can consume dairy products without any problems.
